Video Editing Practice Reflection

Hello Beautiful People! I just spent the last couple weeks learning about the movie editing process and how to use Premiere Pro, and I'm so exited to tell you guys all about my process!

My Learning Process

I have never used Premiere Pro or any video editing software in my life, so I didn't really know what to expect. But honestly it wasn't as hard as I thought. We started out by watching some videos first about the layout and basic functions. Then the videos got into more specific techniques, and we watched as he edited the entire package. After I went through all the video tutorials, it was my turn. One thing that I thought was really cool was that my teacher gave us access to the same clips that the guy in the tutorials used, so I could try to edit them using the same techniques.

The first challenge that I came across was right when I was about to start editing. For some reason, when I opened Premiere on my laptop, the timeline did not show up. This would have been a huge problem because you can not add any media without the timeline. But thankfully, I was able to figure it out after a couple minutes and I could get started.

I decided to start with the manager's interview since it was the most important clip. Something that annoyed me with all of the interviews, not just the manager's, was that they were all really short, and I didn't really get a lot of dialogue to work with. I split up the manager's clip into four parts and placed them in the order I wanted them in. Then I unlinked the audio from the video so that I could remove parts of the video where I wanted other clips to be shown. This way, I could place other clips over him speaking

The next thing I did was find more clips with audio that I could use. I ended up using an interview of a man, and a clip of the manager serving a customer.

After that, I went through the clips to find b-roll to use over the interview audio. One challenge that I had was that a lot of the clips were repetitive. There were at multiple clips of him pouring ice cream, or multiple angles of the sign of the shop. I tried to use a variety of different clips and angles to make it more interesting.

One of the last things I did was the beginning and end. I used b-roll of people walking down the fair in the beginning, and at the end, people walking at night. I used the music that was provided with the videos for both parts. Since there was only one clip of people walking in the daytime, I had to use it twice, which was annoying.
My final step was the lower third for the manager, which was super simple. All I had to do was use one of the pre-set graphics and change the words. The Title was slightly off center, and for some reason it was really glitchy when I tried to move it, so I just left it like that.

Takeaways

Overall, I definitely think my video could have been better, but I think it was pretty good. It was a cool experience and I learned a lot. If I decide to do the film opening for my project, I will definitely practice a little more. But I like how it was easy to learn.

This is my final Video:
